  1. Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students for the business world in contemporary Chinese societies, including contemporary usage of business Chinese, Chinese business culture and customs, and preparation for working and living in China. It is a course with equal emphasis on reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension, and which will focus on how to use Chinese in business related activities. The class will be conducted entirely in Chinese.

Class meetings will focus on the topic of the week and authentic materials, where we work through vocabulary, sentence structures, text reading and conversations, as well as its application in the real business world environment. On Fridays, there will be a wide range of activities (i.e. speeches, debates, interviews, ads, group projects, role plays) on various business-related topics or topics of your choices, which will be a good opportunity to practice oral, written and listening skills in these scenarios.

Important notes:

Performance and class preparation: 

        Class activities, interaction with classmates and teacher

Criteria
  • 4 points—well prepared, excellent performance
  • 3 points—some evidence of preparation, but at least one major problem
  • 2 point — not prepared, lack of participation
  • 1 point—no participation

Preview and review should be your everyday assignments. You are expected to preview the class content before each class.

Attendance

Attendance is required unless being informed otherwise.  Two unexcused absences are permitted.  15 unexcused absences will result in an F for the course. Any excused absence requires an official written note.

Attendance late for 1-10 minutes: the highest performance grade of the day is 3.0/4.0

Attendance late for more than 10 minutes: no credit

Homework and online activity Submission

Homework and online activities must be submitted by the due date for full credit. Homework and online activities that were completed in class will not be given any credit. A late homework assignment and online activity will be accepted prior to the next class meeting in your instructor’s mailbox (2090 FLB) for ½ credits, after which no credit will be possible for this particular assignment or online activity.

Quizzes and Exams

Quizzes will be given before and after each course topic. No make-up quizzes will be given without a legitimate written document.

Three written exams will be given for this course. No make-up exams will be given without a legitimate written document.
